Abstract In order to prepare high strength carboxymethyl cellulose ( CMC ) packaging film, the additive amount of each component was analysed to find the best process conditions. Effect of additive amount of CMC, PEG-400 and ethanol on the packaging film properties was studied, and the factors of response surface test was analysed. The optimum formula of CMC film was studied. The results showed that under certain conditions, with the additive amount of CMC, PEG-400 and ethanol increased, the physical and mechanical properties of CMC films increased first and then decreased, the optimum process parameters of 200 mm ×200 mm CMC film by response surface analysis were obtained: 2.0 g CMC, ω(PEG-400) = 30%, and 10 mL ethanol in 40 mL water, the tensile strength of the film was 19.53 MPa, the elongation was 39.82%.
