Abstract Plant is an important component of wetland ecosystem, which has a great influence on the purification of sewage by constructed wetland. Two woody plants, Bischofia javanica Bl. and Sapium sebiferum (L.) Roxb, were selected to construct different nano-modified filler constructed wetland systems. The effects of woody plants on the removal of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH+4-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO-3-N) and total phosphorus (TP) in domestic sewage were studied by simulating constructed wetlands, which provided a theoretical basis for the application of woody plants in constructed wetlands. The results showed that S. sebiferum (L.) Roxb (S), B. javanica Bl. (A), filler + S. sebiferum (L.) Roxb (FS), filler + B. javanica Bl. (FA) and filler treatment system (F) had certain removal effects on NH+4-N, NO-3-N, TN and TP. The removal rates of TN and TP by FA system were 63.64% (6 d) and 82.92% (6 d), respectively. The removal rate of NH+4-N by filler + S. sebiferum (L.) Roxb (FS) system was 88.30% (6 d).
