Abstract Base on the high-strength bolt connection push-out test results, indicators such as anti-slip load, initial shear stiffness, post slipping stiffness, and ultimate shear bearing capacity that characterize the shear performance of high-strength bolts were defined reasonably to compare the shear performance of high-strength bolts in push-out specimens and beam specimens. On the basis of reasonable definition of shear performance indexes, the shear performance indexes of high-strength bolts in push-out specimens and beam specimens were compared by establishing fine three-dimensional finite element models of push-out specimens and beam specimens. The results showed that the high-strength bolts had similar anti-slip load (about 57 kN) and initial shear stiffness (about 560 kN/mm) in the composite beams and the push-out specimens. Meanwhile the post slipping stiffness of the high-strength bolts in the compositr beams increased by 42.3% and the ultimate shear bearing capacity increased by 3.9%. Therefore, it is safe and feasible to analyze the shear performance of high-strength bolts in composite beams using the results of test specimens.
