Abstract Plant diseases and pests have a huge impact on food production. Chitosan and its derivatives are widely used in plant protection for their sterilization, induced resistance and growth-promoting properties. The synthesis, plant protective activity and action mechanism of carboxymethyl chitosan were briefly introduced. Its applications in plant infectious and noninfectious diseases and pest control were reviewed. Some limitations of its own existence as well as its application prospects in plant diseases and pest control were discussed too.
