Abstract In recent years, persulfate (PS) activation based advanced oxidation technology has been widely used to degrade various organic pollutants in water due to its simple operation, high efficiency and environmental friendliness. In this paper, the ways of activating PS and the effects of the main factors including pH, PS and activator dosage on the degradation of organic pollutants were summarized, and the free radical mechanism and non-free radical mechanism of the degradation of organic pollutants by activating PS process was discussed. Finally, the possible problems of PS activation based advanced oxidation technology at present and to the future development direction were also discussed.
