Abstract In order to prepare environment-friendly waterborne epoxy resin, glycine and polyvinyl alcohol, which can be biodegraded, were selected to modify the epoxy resin through chemical method. The polyvinyl alcohol-glycine polycondensation was prepared by esterification of polyvinyl alcohol and glycine under certain conditions. Then the polyvinyl alcohol-glycine polycondensation was chemically reacted with epoxy resin to prepare waterborne epoxy resin. The structure of waterborne epoxy resin was analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical stirring resistance, salt resistance, alkali resistance and freeze-thaw stability of waterborne epoxy resin were studied. And the contact angle of waterborne epoxy resin was tested. The results showed that the polyvinyl alcohol-glycine polycondensation was reacted successfully with epoxy resin; the prepared waterborne epoxy resin has good mechanical stability, salt resistance and alkali resistance, but poor freeze-thaw stability; the contact angle test results showed that the waterborne epoxy resin has strong hydrophilicity.
