Abstract Based on the mathematical model of generalized memristive devices, a memristive time-delay chaotic system was proposed and the basic dynamic characteristics of it was analyzed. A dual diffusion image encryption and decryption algorithm was designed based on the sequence of it. Through the nonlinear operations such as modulo and XOR, the plaintext, ciphertext and secret key were influenced mutually other, and the connection between plaintext and ciphertext was reduced effectively. Moreover, the effect of encryption was verified by the analysis of histogram, correlation, key sensitivity and antinoise attack. Correspondingly, the validity and feasibility of the algorithm were proved by the numerical results.
