Abstract In order to study the fresh-keeping effects of nano-copper (NC), a new-type nano-bactericide, on cut flowers, the ornamental quality, flower opening and water relations of cut carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus L. ‘Tonic Golem’) were investigated by using vase treatments with different concentrations of NC alone and NC plus 3 g/L sucrose. Compared with the control (i.e., the vase solution was deionized water), 2, 5 and 10 mg/L NC alone had no obvious fresh-keeping effects on the cut carnation flowers, while the combination of 2 or 5 mg/L NC and 3 g/L sucrose could effectively promote flower opening and make the flower colorful, and obviously reduce the petal wilting, thereby enhancing the ornamental quality of cut flowers. Further observation indicated that 2 or 5 mg/L NC plus 3 g/L sucrose significantly increased the relative flower diameter of cut carnations, improved their water uptake, and maintained a higher fresh weight and water balance value than those of control and other treatment. The results showed that the vase treatment with appropriate concentration of NC and sucrose combination solution had positive preservation effects on cut carnations ‘Tonic Golem’.
