Abstract Selenium （Se） is an essential element for animals, it has antioxidant ability, regulates the immunity, prevents disease and has other important physiological functions. The research progress on ab- sorption and metabolism of selenium in animals such as the active forms of selenium and its transport modes, metabolism pathway, absorption organs and tissues distribution in the body, excretion pathways and influential factors of biological effectiveness were reviewed in this paper, and the application of sele- nium in the industry was prospected.
