Abstract Ecological ditches are demonstrated to be a great deal of application advantages in the removal of nutrient pollutants from aqueous solutions in view of a unique plant-sediment-microbial system. In this paper, the effects of various technical parameters and the progress in the practical of ecological ditches such as plant species, structures and microorganism on the nutrient pollutants by ecological ditches were systematically summarized. Furthermore, application limitations and improvement methods on the ecological ditches treatment were proposed, and the future development of ecological ditches was also predicted.
